The Festival of Lights, Boun Lai Heua Fai, or Moon Festival in Luang Prabang is the entire reason we brought the family to Laos during these dates. There is something just so magical and beautiful about this festival that we have just not been able to find anywhere else.

Our stay in Luang Prabang was building towards these nights. The first of the two was the end of the Buddhist Lent. In Luang Prabang the monks decorate their wats, there are over 60 of them here, with handmade lanterns of all colors. There are so many lanterns that they need all the help they can get just keeping the candles lit.
After a long, but great evening of lighting candles and burning our fingertips, we headed off to bed so we could be well rested for the big show the next night.
The main festivity at Buon Lai Heua Fai is a huge procession of local villagers and townspeople showing off their massive floating light boats. The march them proudly down the main street and then they send them on their way down the Mekong River.
We were amazed by the entire show and took part in it by sending our own floating lanterns down the Mekong. It was a wonderful end to our visit to Luang Prabang, Laos.
Off to Hoi An, Vietnam next!
