In this episode of our family travel vlog, we take the kids to Sa Pa Vietnam. Sa Pa is on many lists as one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia to visit. We didn’t see much about doing Sa Pa with family, but we thought we’d give it a shot. It’s known mostly for the trekking through rice terraces, which the kids did an amazing job at. Unfortunately, we didn’t exactly go at the most picturesque time, but the family still had a great time.

We actually were only planning on going to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, which was a little over a 1-hour flight from Da Nang. But, as soon as we arrived in the hotel, we met with the hotel manager/concierge and we lined up a trip to Sa Pa.
Sa Pa is famous for its dramatic landscape, with steep mountain faces lined with rice terraces. I first read about it months prior and wasn’t sure if it was going to be something we would see, but lucky us, we made it.
To get there it took a bit of work. First an overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, right on the Chinese border, then a bit over an hour drive from Lao Cai to Sa Pa. Sa Pa was a bit of a wet muddy mess. The infrastructure felt bizarrely under-maintained for how many tourists were there trekking about. The entire town was in dire need of a facelift.
We didn’t come for the town though, we came for the trekking and it was great. A new experience for all of us, our trekking started on the first day from our “Royal” hotel (they used this term liberally), through Sa Pa town and into the countryside. We trekked for the entire day and it was still beautiful, we could only imagine if we had come at the right time of year, before the rice was harvested, with better weather.
Our second day, we went to Cat Cat village which was lovely and gave us the opportunity to see another hill tribe and how they lived.
Although we were only there for two days, I felt like we saw enough, although it would have been amazing to see it with blue skies and green fields.
